Abstract
This chapter describes the process of the partitioning of the African continent at the end of the 19th century into the countries we still know today. We start by discussing the technological factors that enabled European colonisation. This is followed by an overview of the process of partitioning that discusses the involvement of both Africans and Europeans. The chapter ends with a discussion of the various theories in the literature that have traditionally explained the partitioning of Africa.
